Louisville Woman Fatally Shot on West Madison Street; Police Searching for Suspect in Russell Neighborhood Killing
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — A woman was shot and killed Friday night in Louisville’s Russell neighborhood, prompting a homicide investigation and renewed concern about ongoing violence in the area.
According to Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) spokesperson Dwight Mitchell, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert around 10 p.m. in the 2600 block of West Madison Street.
When police arrived, they found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds. She was taken to University of Louisville Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigation Underway
LMPD’s Homicide Unit is investigating the case. So far, no suspects have been identified or arrested, and officials have not released the woman’s name pending family notification.
“This remains an active investigation,” Mitchell said, encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
Community Concern Over Rising Violence
The Russell neighborhood, one of Louisville’s historically rich but challenged communities, has faced a troubling rise in gun violence. Local residents and advocacy groups continue to call for stronger community partnerships and prevention programs.
Several organizations, including No More Red Dots and Game Changers, have been leading outreach efforts to reduce shootings through mentoring and job placement initiatives.
Friday’s homicide adds to the growing number of fatal incidents across the city this year.
