Swatches Is Brewing Up Something New With Upcoming EP “An Early Afternoon…”
Interview by Greta Waits
Swatches is an Indie Pop, or as they like to say, Indie Soda, band based in Chicago. As catchy as they are emotive, Swatches creates music that is best experienced in a sweaty venue with plenty of close friends.
The group, consisting of Gavin Schultz (Guitar/Vocals), Nick DeLaurentis (Bass/Vocals), and Joe Torres (Drums), formed the fall of 2017 in the DePaul University dorms. As Schultz explained, “DePaul allowed us to build a decent platform and connect with people that have helped us in every step of our growth.” Swatches is incredibly grateful to the ever so supportive local Do-It-Yourself music scene that fosters so many young bands in the city. They encourage everyone to donate to the DIY Chicago Mutual Aid Fund, which you can find linked at the bottom of this article.
Fresh-faced and energetic, their sound, filled with chorus saturated guitar hooks and youthful lyricism, perfectly encapsulates the ambience of the college-aged basement shows they often frequented before the virus. House, or basement, shows are a staple of Chicago’s burgeoning young music scene. Filled with college students and young professionals alike, these high-energy, low-cost venues host both local and traveling bands. When asked which venue was their favorite to perform at, the group responded, “We loved playing Berenice House (an old warehouse venue on the northside, we had some gnarly shows there) as well as Beat Kitchen and Martyr’s! Mainly house shows though, who doesn’t love that.”
Swatches’ highly anticipated upcoming EP, “An Early Afternoon…”, debuts on March 12th. According to Swatches, “brewing is the process of pouring hot shit over something like coffee beans”. Full of bright-eyed optimism, the group claims that COVID-19 has allowed “their beans” to age to perfection, rather than halting the brewing, or songwriting process altogether. Not only have they self-recorded and produced their new EP over quarantine, but they have also begun writing a full-length record that is set to be released later this year. “An Early Afternoon…” will feature 3 brand new songs alongside their most recent single, Dosido.
