Ruston Kelly Closes Out Day Three on BMI Stage at Lollapalooza

August 3rd, 2019, Nashville Tennessee artist having bussed his way in for a special headlining performance on the BMI stage closed out the third day in the most special way possible, and as only Ruston Kelly could.
Opening his set with “Cover My Tracks” from 2018’s Dying Star album, it really was the start of a heartfelt and authentic performance indeed. As he put it in our interview with him earlier, what makes a great song is “If you mean it”, “If you get up on stage or even in your bedroom and you mean it, you’re doing something great”.
While I cannot speak to the bedroom, he sure meant it in his performance on the BMI stage; it really showed. In addition to his great talent, he also has a great sense of humor which he demonstrated with some audience members several times throughout the set.
Touring with Brian D. (guitars and keyboards), John Chong (drums), Calvin Knowles (bass) whose first show with him was that evening, and Tim “TK” Kelly (his dad) on the pedal steel guitar, they played a fairly subdued set, but equally as beautiful. Those in attendance were either moving their heads to the beat, swaying or dancing with their significant others to their music, it was not at all like many of the other artists at Lollapalooza that I’ve seen, it was better.
A couple other songs in Ruston’s set were his hits, “Mockingbird” and “Faceplant” to which the audience loved hearing!
Following his amazing set, Ruston Kelly also performed with The Revivalists at the Vic later that night for an official Lollapalooza after party.
