Rina Sawayama Live at the Riviera Theatre [REVIEW]

Rina Sawayama graced her presence in Chicago last Saturday to a sold-out crowd at the Riviera Theatre. The Chicago date of Rina’s current tour, “The Dynasty Tour” has been rescheduled and relocated multiple times due to scheduling conflicts, the Covid pandemic, and larger capacity demand. Promoting the pandemic released sophomore album, SAWAYAMA, Rina’s show was especially anticipated to see how this genre-bending pop record translated on stage and what tricks she had in store. Those who’ve had our tickets for a couple years now were very thrilled to see what was waiting for them.
The Riviera Theatre was a great venue to host the show as its tier-leveled general admission floor served as a communal, but intimate space for the concert. Locally sourced talent, Miss Toto, started off the show with a hype DJ set that made the crowd more energetic than before. Playing classic club hits by Madonna and Crystal Waters to spinning new modern tracks by Shygirl and Charli XCX was truly a perfect introduction into what the Dynasty tour would look and feel like thematically. Playing songs by artists adjacent to Rina’s sound made everyone feel seen and heard; like the people around us knew an underground sound only special to us.
Rina took the stage to begin her set with the iconic, nu-metal banger opener “Dynasty”. Served with dance moves and flashing lights, the opening couldn’t have looked better. The rest of the show was no exception, filled with more choreo, outfit changes, belting high notes, new songs, and intimate moments. Other highlights include runway-stomping track “Comme Des Garçons”, intuitive meta-thinking rock song, “Who’s Gonna Save U Now?” and emotional deep cut, “Bad Friend”. The Dynasty Tour in Chicago exceeded all expectations and was truly worth the wait.
