Lunar Statues releases debut album Meditations in an Emergency
Seth Arp, frontman of Chicago-based duo Ego Mechanics, goes solo (and electronic) on his new LP
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS—Lunar Statues, Ego Mechanics frontman Seth Arp’s solo project, has released its debut album Meditations in an Emergency. The album was self-released on December 10 on all digital platforms.
Recorded over the past year during the pandemic in Arp’s apartment, Meditations in an Emergency is a departure from the bluesy garage rock listeners are used to hearing from Arp in Ego Mechanics. Instead, the album delves into ambient electronic and chillwave soundscapes, still driven by guitar. Listeners of artists like Tycho, Khruangbin, or even the XX will likely find something to enjoy here.
The album began to take shape when the world went into quarantine back in March 2020. Looking for a way to keep his mental health afloat, Arp started spending his evenings crafting these songs. Meditations in an Emergency’s sonic narrative follows the state of the world throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning with darker, moodier tracks and building towards a more reflective and hopeful tone.
“I titled this album Meditations in an Emergency because that’s what exactly what each of these songs were,” Arp said. “Our lives—and our relationship to the world as a whole—has fundamentally changed as a result of the pandemic. Writing these songs was my way of processing it all, and I hope they help listeners make sense of this rollercoaster of a time, too.”
Arp has worked with Chicago producers and engineers Ellis Clark and Chris Steinmetz on previous projects but takes up those duties himself on his first full-length solo album. The tracks range in tone from dark and sprawling (“San Rafael”) to dancing and hopeful (“Backroad”). The album will also include a reworked version of Ego Mechanics song “This Other Side,” which won Chicago Music Guide’s Best Song of 2020.
Lunar Statues previously released two singles in May, “Dusk” and “Skyline,” and both are currently available to stream on all platforms. Listen below:
