This Saturday a rambunctious and striking storm moved through Chicago’s north side providing for high winds, debris on the sidewalks and power outages across blocks in various neighborhoods. The neighborhood of Lincoln Park was no exception. At 7:00 pm, doors were set to open for Jean Dawson’s return to Chicago for a headline set at Lincoln Hall, but a power-outage threatened to put the night in peril.

Hundreds of people were already lined up outside of Lincoln Hall, cascading down the Alley of Dreams (which runs along the southeast wall of the building), not knowing about the possibility of a cancellation looming. Then, as luck would have it, the storm eased and the power returned down Lincoln Ave. The show would go on.

Not to be out-done by the storm, Jean Dawson brought a passionate and thunderous performance to the stage with songs from his brand new LP, CHAOS NOW*, released nearly a month ago on October 7th. Taking the stage after opener Junior Varsity pre-charged the audience, Dawson exploded onto the stage with “Dummy,” an album track from the previous LP (2020’s Pixel Bath) before giving a taste of some of the new material with singles “PORN ACTING” and “THREE HEADS*.”

Dawson, often standing over his audience with a microphone attached to a mic arm that he would hold and project into the masses to capture their refrains of his music, had the presence of a cinematic sage, covered in layers and nearly hooded by a large knit cap that that only allowed glimpses of a few strands of his hair.

Dawson, patrolling left and right on the stage, worked the audience into an excited playful frenzy as the night went on in full command of his sound and fans who were engaged with every second of the performance. As the night continued and Dawson moved through tunes from Pixel Bath, he ramped up the offerings from CHAOS NOW* such as singles “PIRATE RADIO*,” and “SICK OF IT* bringing Lincoln Hall to a fever pitch as the audience collided in a massive mosh pit to close out the night.
