CD Review: Ottmar Liebert
& Luna Negra “La Semana”
Review by: Linda Grant
In
1991 I was introduced to Ottmar Liebert’s music
when attending a Natalie Cole concert at Popular
Creek when she was promoting her “unforgettable”
cd celebrating the music of her late father Nat
King Cole. Ottmar Liebert, who opened for Ms. Cole
was promoting his award wining CD Nouvou Flamenco
featuring the smash hit Barcelona nights. Several
CD’s later, Ottmar is back with yet another brilliant
instrumental masterpiece “La Semana.”
The
best way to describe Ottmar Liebert’s music is to
ask you to picture yourself on a beach in Spain.
While listening to the water crash on shore, your
thoughts linger on the palm tree’s swaying in the
warm breeze. How do you catch a feeling in a bottle?
My suggestion would be to turn on Ottmar Lieberts
CD, close your eyes and imagine your there. It’s
easy with this CD. The first track “Carrousel,”
reminds me of being in a bar in Spain, watching
Flamenco dancers while bathed in warm reds and yellows.
Reminiscent of Strunz and Farrah, Ottmar Liebert’s
guitar playing can be frantic then mellow within
the same song; painting a portrait of emotion one
can only experience by sitting back and letting
go. Of the 12 tracks, only one “La Luna,” would
I consider a ballad. The 11 remaining songs are
mid to max tempo for this kind of music. Ottmar
Liebert’s music is a cross between Flamenco and
South American traditional.
Ottmar
Liebert will be performing at the Park West on September
10th. Tickets are now on sale and I encourage you
to go experience this versatile guitarist. His CD
“La Semana” can be purchased everywhere. For more
