mellowdrone CD Review by Linda Grant
6/27/04

When we receive press kits from bands or their management companies, 9 out of 10 times we do not know what to expect. Yes, we are told they are metal, jazz, rock or dance, but one doesn’t really know until they listen to the music what they really are. I was assigned Mellowdrone and I was blown away!

I remember when I was 17, the Brickyard Mall in Chicago was being built, and there was no fence around the structure, so we “burnouts” could go up and smoke a few and look out as if we were on a mountain above the city. I clearly remember how I felt listening to Pink Floyd one day when I was alone in my car, looking at the sunset from the “mountain.” Listening to Mellowdrone brought back that feeling. I felt I was transported back in time to when the music of the day was thematic, layered, big and dreamy.

The first “sound” I heard was George Martins “wall of sound.” I clearly heard a Beatles influence. Then, suddenly Pink Floyd, David Bowie and ELP. Music that was not flat and straight, but rather full and dramatic. They painted a picture I haven’t enjoyed in a long time. Mellowdrone is reminiscent the greatest thematic bands, bands that I never hear anymore.

Mellowdrone’s bio is bit long to cover here, so I suggest visiting their website www.mellowdrone.com. You can hear excerpts from their CD “Go Get 'em Tiger.” As well as tour information and bios.

Mellowdrone will be appearing at the Bottom Lounge on June 29th. I highly recommend going to their show. It will be a unique experience.

Today is my 41st Birthday. I think I will put on the Mellowdrone CD and remember how I felt at 17, sitting in the car, no worries, no bills, just great music.
