The Birthday Massacre
Live at the House of Blues
Review By: Gari Hart

In a time when music has become mundane and romantic occasions come once in a blue moon, Chicago was recently twice fortunate to experience a performance by a band that displays all details of a romantic evening, and exhibits nothing ordinary in the least.

A band that goes by the name of The Birthday Massacre; a relatively newer industrial band off Metropolis Records that fuses an aspect of 1980s' fantasy film scores to their work.

Coming through Chicago rarely, their purpose this time was to promote their sophomore album, “Walking With Strangers.” A mission accomplished with benevolence and cunning. The Birthday Massacre hypnotized an eager set of fans right from the start. Opening with the single, “Video Kid” from their first album, the crowd swooned immediately and became lost in the night.

The band didn't waste much time before submerging their fans under a vibrant cloud of unheard material from “Walking With Strangers.” To fill most of the set list with new songs, that a room of fans hasn't had the chance to relate to yet, is a gamble most music groups wouldn't attempt, nor

could they pull off well. However, not only did The Birthday Massacre accept this challenge, they emerged victorious. By the twilight of the show, not one individual in The House of Blues seemed immune to the call of the new album to add to their personal library.

The night passed way too quickly, as all good things do. Though all and all, Chicago was left with the warm kiss of The Birthday Massacre still wet upon our foreheads, and like giddy school children we're not eager for it to fade, but greatly anticipating another meeting with the band soon.
