ABOUT
THE ARTIST.
Stephanie
Castillo and Jesse Korleski, bored one night in beautiful South
Beloit, WI, started feeling a bit creative. Armed with only
a bass, amp and keyboard, they began throwing around ideas for
fresh new music. Powered by Jesse's modern sound and energized
by Stephanie's high-voltage vocals, Salva Me was born.
Jesse
Korleski (bass/songwriter and lyricist) is an experienced studio
musician, and offers his talents on drums, guitar, electric
bass and stand-up bass. Stephanie Castillo (vocalist/lyricist)
has been studying classical technique for ten years. Her powerful,
angelic sounds add color and a story to the music.
With
this unique sound, Jesse and Stephanie started moving toward
a new realm that was outside of their prior music experiences.
In a matter of months, what started out as a night of boredom
became a hot new groove-alicious sound. After writing a handful
of songs, Stephanie and Jesse decided their group was ready
to expand so they invited a couple of
other musicians into the band. Recently, the band added keyboardist
Nicole Steed. She replaces the two temporary keyboardists that
helped Salva Me get their start.
The
collective talents of Salva Me bring a complex and distinctive
sound to the world of music. With a perfect blend of vocal styling
and musical imagination, Salva Me is definitely beating their
own path of originality.
From
spawning from one night of boredom, your sample songs capture
an elegance and dreamy beauty not heard the likes of here in
Chicago in some time.
Awe , Jestin and Steph would like to thank you for that. We
are eager to gain more exposure in the Chicago area. We have
played Elbo Room once, last spring, and since we are so [relatively]
close, its not too hard to play out there. We love the vibe
of Chicago's music scene right now...we do feel we are a bit
'ahead of the curve' on what's popular in the live music scene,
but we have been complimented on our music throughout the Midwest,
and if our music works in Lawrence, Kansas, we are pretty sure
it would work in Chicago.
So,
where did your name come from?
[Jestin] Stephanie was a vocal major at NIU in Dekalb and she
was singing the dramatic "Verde's Requiem" and used
that as an enticement to us to attend one of her concerts, because,
she gets to belt out SALVA ME (naturally a Latin phrase) at
the top of her lungs, which we used to kick around as sort of
of a little inside joke. After the band was formed, band naming
time came, the joke returned.
Were
any of you in bands prior to Salva Me?
[Jestin] Yes, in fact I introduced Stephanie to my other band
, 'Unicycle Dragrace'. I asked her to play keys and do backup
vocals for me while I sang and played lead guitar. The sparks
flew, and we got into what started as the 'acid jazz' sound,
then progressing to the 'trip hop'. When we had a handful of
songs, we started playing out live in Rockford, Lake Geneva
and Beloit, as Salva Me.
How
old are each of you?
Jestin-26 Stephanie-23 Kevin-21, ( the keys player is sort of
a rotating position ...We are looking for someone who would
be a permanent member in that position, if anyone would be interested...lol)
Where
are all of your hometowns?
[Stephanie] South Beloit, IL,
[Jestin]
Brodhead, WI (that's outside the booming metropolis of Beloit)
[Kevin]
Waukesha, WI, outside Milwaukee.
Jesse,
where have you been studying music?
[Jestin] I studied under two different teachers, the second
of which was a jazz professor I studied privately in a studio
in Janesville Wisconsin
What
artists have inspired you as a band and individually?
[Stephanie]- I would have to say Bjork, Fiona Apple, Melissa
Ramsey
[Jestin]-
Primus, Smashing Pumpkins, Bjork, lots of various hip hop and
R&B, indie rock bands
[Kevin]-
Guns and roses <laughs> seriously though...
What
non musical inspirations do each of you have?
[Stephanie] Phil Collins hands down.
[Jestin] Eddie Meade, our manager, from Sirius Productions,
in Milwaukee.
[Kevin]
stares the question blankly.
How
many tracks are on your album, “The Flavorlessness of water”?
9 tracks on "The Flavorlessness of Water". We are
already working on our 2nd album. We have about 5 songs laid
down for that, and would like to put more songs on the 2nd album.
We aren't at the mastering stage for those songs yet. We are
considering a 2-disk set, which would have one CD being our
fast, dance music, and the other being the lighter, smoother
stuff. Maybe call it something like, "Saturday Night/Sunday
Morning"....but that is all up in the air right now...we'll
see, its a work in progress.
How
long did it take you to produce the album?
Working on it for about 8 months sporadically. We liked playing
out live, more than sitting in the studio. That's pretty frustrating.
But strangely, "Get somewhere" and "Devils Acceptance"
were recorded only two weeks after the band formed.
Where
did you record it?
[Jestin] Well, some at home on my own equipment, parts at 'Madison
Media Institute', and parts in 'Milwaukee at Transit Recordings'.
How
have the sales been on it? Has it exceeded or met your expectations
and hopes?
[Stephanie]
It's done very well for how fast we put it out. I'm definitely
ready for our number 2 album though. Jestin- Its sort of early
to tell in a way, but we sell at least some at every event we've
ever played at so that keeps me smiling
Where
would you like to see yourselves in 2 years?
[Stephanie] Be a full time musician
[Jestin]
I'd have to agree with Steph, we would definitely like to become
a national act though hopefully in that time
Thank
you for your time!
[The
Band] Thank you ! Get ready for us, Chicago !
