INTERVIEW
An Interview with: J-Henry
By: Dennis M. Kelly
January, 2006

ABOUT THE ARTIST.

Henry grew up in a working class family of 5 boys in Central New Jersey, listening to Springsteen, Mellencamp, and Bob Seger, while fine-tuning his own version of heartland rock.

While playing as an acoustic artist in the New Jersey club scene, Henry was spotted by Anthony Krizan from the Spin Doctors, who immediately connected with his simple, heartfelt lyrics and melodies. Together they set out to produce a cd and form a band that would compliment his sound.

Two years later, J-Henry’s cd “Another Long Day” is being released on the independent RockView Records and he boasts an outstanding live show ~ an 8-piece classic rock band of seasoned players whose members have toured with the likes of Meatloaf, Mellencamp, and the Stones. Touring the New Jersey and New York scene, the group has received rave reviews and developed a cult following. “One of the things I’m proudest of is that everyone tells us that when we perform live, it sounds like the record,” says Henry.

How was life for you growing up?
It was a fun normal childhood. I grew up in a house with 5 brothers and most played music, so there was always good music in our house. I did all the things most kids did…basketball, basketball and lots of guitar playing.

When did you realize that you wanted to be a musician?
I started playing as a young teenager and knew right away this is what I wanted to do

When did you buy your first guitar and did you take any lessons for it?
My grandfather owned a music store and that was where I got my first guitar…I never took lessons. I play by ear.

Were you playing solo shows initially then?
No, just playing with local area bands…Occasionally, I would play local bars acoustic trying out new original material

I am assuming that Anthony was no longer a member of the Spin Doctors when you hooked up with him?
I knew Anthony since we were young kids, but when we started working seriously together he was out of the Spin Doctors

How long did it take to put the rest of the band together?
About a year

Which band members performed with Meatloaf, the Stones and Mellencamp?
My backup singers Jenny Douglass and her Sister Vivvian Sessoms toured with the stones and Mellencamp..right now they are on the road with Rob Thomas from Matchbox Twenty…he is doing a solo tour. And CC has been singing regularly with Meatloaf for years. They just finished a US and European Tour

Have you performed outside NY yet? If so, where?
Yes, this past summer, we did some NASCAR gigs in Indianappoils at the Brickyard 400, Stockton CA, Milwaukee. We also played Boomsday in Knoxville TN…Boston last week at the Head of the Charles with the All American Rejects.

How would you describe one of your concerts?
Just great live music…8 piece band and we always have fun on stage….and it shows through

What responses have you gotten from your album entitled “Another Long Day”?
We have gotten a lot of great reviews from all over the country. And we have a story coming out in the NY Times in the next couple weeks

Where would you like to see the band in a year or two?
On a major tour as an opening act and then doing our own tour….but definitely on the road

Thank you very much for your time!
