1.
How would you rate your childhood overall? (A good one, bad
one?)
Overall I would rate my childhood as a good one. Although it
was very different from a lot of kids my age because I had to
grow up fast I am greatful for the experiences and opportunities
that were afforded to me even though my experiences sometimes
work against me as an adult because I've seen so much.
2. When your parents separated, how did you handle that?
When my parents separated I was too young to remember but I
feel as though the relationship between my father and I was
as healthy as it could have been. I visited him every weekend
until I was old enough to feel like I needed to spend my weekends
with my friends and my mother never assassinated his character
in front of me. She allowed me to form my own opinions of him
instead of trying to make me feel a certain way about him because
it didn't work out between them. I love her for that.
3. You’re endured some difficult times indeed, what
was the source of your strength (if you don’t mind me asking?)
I tend to draw my strength from everyone around me especially
my mother. Growing up I witnessed so many different things and
I spent a lot of my time with older women eavesdropping on the
conversations they had about life. I've always been the type
of person that learns and sometimes lives vicariously through
others. Overtime this learning process helped me deal with heartache,
pain and dissappointments in life.
4. If there would be any morals or lessons that you’ve
learned through your life experiences, what would they be?
They are quite a few lessons that I learned and as cliche as
they may sound I actually live by these expressions. The first
is to live each day like its your last because tomorrow is not
promised. The second is to treat people like you want to be
treated. The last is to always have faith and dream big. But
the one that's bigger than the rest is to put God first and
everything thing else will follow.
5. Who inspired you musically growing up?
Growing up I was inspired by Mary J. Blige, Brandy, Patti Labelle,
Luther Vandross, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Micheal Jackson
and Brian McKnight to name a few. I love so many different artists'
and all for different reasons. Its just too many to name.
6. What have you done in the realm of acting?
As an adult I haven't really had the opportunity to experiment
with acting yet because I've been so focused on my music. But
as I child I've done a lot of different stage plays and musicals.
My friends and I are always acting out our favorite parts in
movies like Waiting to Exhale, What's Love Got To Do With It
and Friday, so I guess I get in some practice every now and
then.
7. Where do most of your inspirations come from?
Most of my inspiration comes from things that go on with and
around me.
8. Are any of your songs based on any personal experiences?
All of my songs are based on personal experiences. However when
I am writing songs I realize that I am writing to entertain
others and some of the details may be exaggerated but the story
is still real to me and many others who may have experienced
it. For instance "Brokendown Palace" is derived from
the film Broke Down Palace however since the story was told
from a middle-class perspective already I opted to flip the
story and tell it from the perspective of a lower-class female.
So many people around me have endured the actual story as it
was told. For me though my experience with someone I care about
asking me to do something outlandish didn't involve drugs but
something very similar.
9. Do you try writing positive based songs? Or just what you’re
inspired to write?
I am mostly driven to write about things that inspire me but
sometimes I have concepts that I go with and build off of. Yet,
I recently consciously tried to write songs that were a little
more positive and happy because I think its so important to
explore all human emotions instead of concentrating on just
one. Its so easy to write songs about being heartbroken or someone
dragging you through the mud. So I decided to tap into what
it felt like to really love someone and everything about them.
Hence "All About You" and "Ain't Gotta Have".
It felt good too afterwards because it reminds me of the feelings
that sometimes are overshawdowed by relationships sometimes
not working out.
10. How long did it take you to produce your album?
It took a little over 4 months to get everything recorded but
many of the songs were written months beforehand and just needed
to be recorded. Usually I like to record the songs right when
I'm done writting them but I decided to write the songs and
live with them for a while to make sure they had the right feeling.
I think I sat on them a little too long cause my friend use
to make me sing them over and over again whenever we rode in
my car.
11. What venues in Chicago have you performed at so
far?
I recently had a show at Chicago State and I've performed on
Fox News in the morning and at the Harold Wahington Cultural
Center as well.
12. Have you performed outside of Chicago and if so,
where?
I have a few shows lined up for the near future because I'm
planning to do a showcase that's going to travel to a few different
cities. But right now I don't have the schedule right off hand.
13. What does the next year hold in store for you?
I really look forward to this year being incredible and the
sky being the limit. I mean you can plan and plan all you want
but when God has something in mind it can send your plans out
the window. So I have faith that this year will be better than
every one that came before it and I'll be that much closer to
my dreams coming true.
14. Is there a man in your life?
I don't have anyone in my life right now but I wouldn't mind
someone finding me. Notice I said someone finding me cause I've
found that whenever women try to find men it just doesn't work.
15. What are some positive observations about life that
you feel are important and on the flip-side, what are some negative
ones that you’d like to change if you could?
I've grown to know that everything happens for a reason and
although everything isn't always positive I try to take the
good with the bad. Overtime I learned to take the blessings
as well as the lessons in life because every time I go through
something I'm always better because of it.
Thank you very much Madison for taking the time today!
Thanks for having me it was my pleasure.
