An Interview with: Afterthought
By: Jina S. Kelly
March 2006

ABOUT THE ARTIST
David Youngman - Guitar, mandolin, and a new foot bass keyboard
Derek Brown - Saxophones, flute, irish whistles

Biography
In a genre busting, toe-tapping combination of Jazz, Bluegrass, and Pop, the instrumental acoustic jam duo of Afterthought has been enthralling audiences for the past three years at festivals, community concerts, and churches all over the state of Michigan. This group’s "refreshing new sound" (-thestagehand.com) consists of Derek Brown's Jazz influenced saxophone andother woodwind instruments along with David Youngman's Jazz, Classical, Rock and Bluegrass guitar and mandolin abilities. Also put into use are saxophone harmonizers, guitar phrase samplers, and other effects pedals, which help create a fuller and more unique sound.

After performing full-time at over 25 paying events last summer, Afterthought released their second and newest album, Jazzgrass. This highly innovative disk features mostly original music, written by David and Derek as well as a few jazz classics and new arrangements of sacred tunes, such as “Be Thou My Vision.” Revue Magazine of Grand Rapids claims "This is a terrific instrumental disk...Get it to relax and enjoy!" Their fan base has been growing steadily, consisting of college students, young adults, and older folks, since the groups’ formation over 3 years ago.

David and Derek’s goals for Afterthought are to perform their music full-time, sharing their joy and creativity with audiences across the country. Speaking on Afterthought’s purpose David states, "We want to create great music and entertainment for people to enjoy life.”

How did you guys meet?
Derek's family moved to Lakeview where I (David) am from. We met in the middle school concert band and began playing music outside of school during our high school years. We were also involved in a lot of church activities together and did a lot of church music together. We then played a lot of rock, ska, and punk music. This led to more experimenting in jazz and different sounds until we got into our "Afterthought" sound.

How did you come up with the name Afterthought?
After two and a half hours of trying to figure this out, I(David) got the dictionary, closed my eyes, opened it up and pointed to a word and it was Afterthought, (Pretty deep, huh) so it has no meaning.

Besides Sizzle on Broadway, do you think you'd come to Chicago again?
Most Definately! We love the Jazz scene in Chicago.

Did you ever think of having a full band?
We like the idea of creating full sounds with very few instruments. Right now it's just Derek and I. My brother played bass with us for a couple of years. We also played with a drummer for a brief time. I think the sounds we like are in a 3 to 4 piece band but we just haven't come across the right musicians yet.

What is your favorite type of venue to perform at?
We really like small tight settings where we can have conversations with listeners and interact. Clubs, coffee shops, etc. I think we our often at
our best and feel we can experiment more in these settings.

What are your current day jobs? (or are you students?)
Derek is finishing his last year at Hope College in Holland, MI where he has studied Jazz and Classical saxophone. I (David) am substitute teaching and doing private study on the classical guitar.

Did you take any lessons at all?
We both grew up self taught for about 8 years. Once we got into college we took lessons.

What type of crowds do you like to perform to (college students, adults, etc)?
We really like to perform to anyone. College students and young to middle-age adults seem to enjoy our music the most though.

Who writes the music or is it done jointly?
Derek and I both write the music. It's always different. Sometimes Derek or I might have a whole song put together and show to the other. Other times one of us will have only a riff or simple melody and we'll both work on it. Quite often we say to each other to have a new song ready for the next practice as if it were an assignment. And it usually
has a catch like " We need another energetic more Bluegrass style song....or...We need another sacred arrangement."

When you reach the level of success that you'd like, what would be the first thing you'd like to do?
Success for us would be to use our talents as best we can. There is no limit to it. We want to always improve and to work at our music in a way that pleases God.

What are your plans in the near future?
We both plan to continue our studies in music. Derek plans to go to Graduate school to study Jazz Saxophone. I will continue private studies on the classical guitar. We both plan to continue this music that we have enjoyed so much creating and performing. Also, Derek will be getting married this summer.
