Minnesota Man Arrested After High-Speed Pursuit Following Burglary Call in Washburn County

WASHBURN COUNTY, WISCONSIN — A burglary call in Spooner escalated into a dangerous high-speed pursuit and foot chase that ended with the arrest of a Minnesota probation absconder, according to law enforcement.

Deputies identified the suspect as 30-year-old Caleb Shuman of New Richmond, Wisconsin, who allegedly fled the scene of an attempted burglary in a black sedan, reaching speeds of 100 mph and nearly causing multiple head-on collisions.

Chase Across Highway and Into Woods

According to the criminal complaint, officers pursued Shuman as he sped through Washburn County roads before abandoning the moving car and fleeing into a wooded area.

During the pursuit, authorities said Shuman allegedly swallowed fentanyl in an attempt to evade arrest as officers closed in. He was eventually apprehended after a brief foot chase.

Charges and Second Suspect

Shuman now faces multiple felony charges in Washburn County tied to the burglary and pursuit.

The original 911 caller had also described a second suspect, though police said no additional arrests have been made. Authorities continue to investigate the identity and involvement of the possible accomplice.

Public Safety Concerns

Law enforcement emphasized the risks posed by Shuman’s reckless driving, noting that the chase endangered other motorists on the highway. The case highlights the dangers of high-speed pursuits when suspects attempt to evade police while under the influence of drugs.
