uncommon ground teams with UNICEF for the Tap Project for World Water Week
March 22-28, 2009
Dear Friends, Family & Fans of uncommon ground,
As a socially-conscious member of your community, we are committed to making the world a better place and motivated to support those causes that are of interest to our staff and our customers. This March, we are privileged to help UNICEF put an end to the preventable deaths of children due to a lack of clean water by supporting the Tap Project.
You see, every day around the world, 25,000 children die of preventable causes including a lack of clean water and waterborne disease. We believe that number should be zero and invite you to visit our restaurant during World Water Week, March 22-28, 2009, to join us in this important project. When you dine with us during that week and donate $1 or more for the tap water you usually enjoy for free, you provide a child with safe drinking water for 40 days! Every dollar raised through the Tap Project supports UNICEF water, sanitation and hygiene programs. Just imagine the impact you can make along with thousands of other dining patrons and restaurants across the country that have joined the effort.
We are proud to stand behind this worthwhile cause and believe that with UNICEF, we can achieve our goal of reaching zero preventable deaths. If you are unable to join us during World Water Week, please visit tapproject.org to make a donation or to learn more about the world water crisis and how you can get involved.
Together, we can save the lives of children throughout the world.
Thank you for your continued support of uncommon ground and being a concerned and active member of the community.
Sincerely,
Helen & Michael Cameron
and the entire staff at uncommon ground

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MARTINA McBRIDE SET TO SHINE MARCH 24th
Multi-Platinum McBride Releases 10th Studio Album on RCA Records
February 11, 2009 (Nashville, TN) -- Since day one, Martina McBride has carved out her niche as a woman people can relate to. Women see themselves in her and many find inspiration in her songs. Powerful. Strong. Positive. Many might use those words to describe the four-time CMA Female Vocalist and multi-platinum-selling artist. These descriptions are also used to define the word Shine – fittingly, the name of McBride’s tenth studio album, set for release March 24th on RCA Records.
“I’m so excited about this music and this time in my life,” says McBride. “Creatively I have a renewed energy and I feel like this album reflects that.”
Rewinding to a year ago, McBride was in the middle of her major headlining arena and amphitheatre tour, an endeavor that would take her coast-to-coast in support of her self-produced CD Waking Up Laughing (the record that gave way to mega-hit “Anyway” and Grammy-nominated “For These Times.”) For some, this might not be the time to take on a new creative pursuit – but for McBride there couldn’t have been a better time.
In order to dig deep into that creativity, she teamed up with chart-topping producer and virtuoso guitarist, Dann Huff. Admittedly, she struggled to find inspiration on some of her latest releases, but co-producing with someone new forced McBride out of her comfort zone and re-lit the fire within.
“I wanted to move forward, production-wise, which isn’t always easy. I think it was time to find somebody with a different, fresh perspective on my music,” explains McBride. “I felt like I needed someone to help me do things a bit differently, and I instinctively felt Dann was right for the job.”
Ten months later, she is releasing an album not categorized necessarily as a departure, but certainly something fresh and innovative.
The guitar influence from Huff can be heard throughout and lyrically the songs provide messages that are pure Martina – but said in a different way. Known for her uncanny ability to pick memorable songs, McBride selected from some of the best songwriters in Nashville like Tom Shapiro, Darrell Scott, Neil Thrasher, the Warren Brothers and Hillary Lindsey.
The first single off the record, “Ride” is a dynamic and upbeat showcase of McBride’s signature no-holds-barred vocals that relays a carpe-diem message: Shine while you have the chance to shine. It along with “Sunny Side Up” (written by McBride and the Warren Bros.) and “I Just Call You Mine” all include a lyric or line with reference to Shine – making it ideal for the album title.
And as the album title suggests, McBride’s optimism beams through when discussing this project as a whole: “This album feels to me like when I was making Evolution or Emotion. That was such a creative time for me with this crazy energy and creativity. I felt so passionate about those records and I feel the same way about Shine.”
“What’s exciting to me is that I still feel like my career is growing,” says an enthusiastic Martina. “There are still people discovering my music and I think that is a great place to be.”
McBride’s powerhouse vocals have earned her more than 18 million in album sales, garnered 22 Top 10 singles, six of which ranked number one, and awarded her a mantle of honors, including a record tying four CMA Female Vocalist of the Year trophies. The Kansas native’s fiery, passionate vocals have created such signature hits as “Independence Day,” “Wild Angels,” “A Broken Wing,” “Blessed” and “This One’s for the Girls.” These songs along with hits such as “Concrete Angel,” “Love’s The Only House,” “God’s Will” and “Anyway” have become not only memorable musical statements but resounding social commentaries as well.

PIEDMONT BLUES GUITARIST AND VOCALIST JOHN CEPHAS, 1930 - 2009It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of John Cephas.
John Cephas died of natural causes on Wednesday, March 4, 2009. He was 78. Well known as one half of the award-winning Piedmont blues duo Cephas & Wiggins, John’s remarkable and delicate finger picking and rich, baritone vocals placed him firmly at the forefront of acoustic blues artists. John received a National Heritage Fellowship Award (often called the “Living Treasure Award”) in 1989. This is the highest honor the U.S. Government offers a traditional artist. Two weeks ago, John was honored as one of eight black trailblazers as designated by the Library of Virginia's African American History Month.
John Cephas, along with his harmonica playing partner Phil Wiggins, performed thousands of concerts and festivals all over the world. Often under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, the two spent much of the 1980s abroad, playing Europe, Africa, Central and South America, China, Australia and New Zealand. In 1988, they were among the first Americans to perform at the Russian Folk Festival in Moscow. In 1997 Cephas & Wiggins performed for President Bill Clinton. In addition, John appeared on stage portraying a blind bluesman in the Kennedy Center production of Blind Man Blues. He also appeared in a production of Zora Neal Hurston’s play, Polk County, in Washington, D.C.
Among his many endeavors, John served on the Executive Committee of the National Council for the Traditional Arts, and has testified before Congressional committees. He is also a founder of the Washington, D.C. Blues Society. “More than anything else,” said John, “I would like to see a revival of country blues by more young people…more people going to concerts, learning to play the music. That’s why I stay in the field of traditional music. I don’t want it to die.”
John Cephas was born in Washington, D.C. in 1930 into a deeply religious family and raised in Bowling Green, Virginia. His first taste of music was gospel, but blues soon became his calling. After learning to play the alternating thumb and fingerpicking guitar style that defines Piedmont blues, John began emulating the records he heard by Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Blake, Rev. Gary Davis and other early blues artists. Aside from playing blues, John worked early on as a professional gospel singer, carpenter and Atlantic fisherman. By the 1960s, he was starting to make a living from his music.
John first met his future partner Phil Wiggins in 1976 at the Smithsonian National Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. and the two quickly formed a duo. By the early 1980s, the international blues community recognized this marvelous acoustic twosome as the leading exponents of traditional Tidewater blues. While overseas in 1981, they recorded two albums, Living Country Blues and Sweet Bitter Blues, for the German L&R label. Cephas & Wiggins recorded their first domestic album, Dog Days Of August (Flying Fish Records), in 1987 in John’s living room, and it quickly won a Blues Music Award for Best Traditional Blues Album of the Year.
In 1996, Cephas & Wiggins made their Alligator Records debut with Cool Down. They followed up with Homemade, Somebody Told The Truth and Shoulder To Shoulder. Their most recent CD, 2009’s Richmond Blues, was released on the Smithsonian Folkways label.“Wonderfully rich vocals and jaunty acoustic guitar. Plenty of spirit and soul, humor and sorrow.”--The Washington Post
"Blues music is truth.” --John Cephas

North Central College to host guitarist Peter Mayer in Wentz Concert Hall
NAPERVILLE, Ill. (March 4, 2009)-Guitarist, singer and songwriter Peter Mayer comes to North Central College for a performance at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 22, in Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave.
Mayer has toured the world in his role as lead guitarist for the past 20 years with Jimmy Buffett's group, the Coral Reefer Band. He has collaborated with artists like guitarist Sonny Landreth and jazz fusion drummer Dave Weckl. He's also recorded 12 albums of material with his own band, the Peter Mayer Group, known earlier in its career as PM.
Mayer melds an eclectic writing style, a distinctive voice and virtuoso musicianship to create compelling and accessible music that is electrifying in live performance. He has studied and taught jazz guitar at Webster University, and he has shared the stage with such artists as James Taylor, Mac McAnally, Don Henley and others.
Mayer's life began in Tamilnadu, the far southern region of India, where his parents served as missionaries for 17 years before returning to their Missouri roots. Musical influences from that period can be heard in his playing: "I can remember Indian musicians giving Christmas concerts in my parents' house. Wildly playing drums and flutes, shakers and bells, they would go on for hours and hours."
The Peter Mayer Group boasts between them an extensive performing and songwriting portfolio with experience in any number of styles from jazz to country rock to classical. Mayer released his debut album for Warner Brothers Records in 1988. Working with producer Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Hornsby) the album contained the single "Piece of Paradise," which reached No. 8 on the Billboard singles chart.
Scheiner, who produced Buffett's "Off to See the Lizard" album, suggested that Buffett use PM for the recording sessions, and Buffett hired them as part of his own Coral Reefer Band.
Mayer talked about performing with his own band when he's not working with Jimmy Buffett's group in an interview published by Premier Guitar magazine in December 2008.
"I love to sing, I love to play and I love to write lyrics, too. It's all just an expression of who I am and what I do. I'd go crazy if I just had one thing. I just don't want to get stale, you know? Variety brings me peace. Ever since I heard the Beatles and I heard classical music and rock and roll and Bo Diddley, I'm just so jazzed by music-it's the way I think the world keeps its sanity," he said.
Mayer's band is based in the St. Louis area and includes versatile instrumentalist R. Scott Bryan on percussion, violinist Maggie Estes, and bassist Marc Torlina.
Tickets for Mayer's March 22 performance in Wentz Concert Hall are $25/adults, $15/students and senior citizens. Call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit www.northcentralcollege.edu/show.

THE CHICAGO JAZZ ENSEMBLE®,
AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JON FADDIS®,
CELEBRATE THE 10th AMERICAN HERITAGE JAZZ SERIES
featuring
THE ART OF THE COMPOSER: MUSIC BY WILLIAM RUSSO & FRANK FOSTER
FRIDAY, MARCH 20, at 8:00 pm at HARRIS THEATER
CHICAGO, February 17, 2009 – Artistic Director Jon Faddis and The Chicago Jazz Ensemble (The CJE) continue the celebration of the 10th American Heritage Jazz Series with The Art of the Composer: Music by William Russo and Frank Foster on Friday, March 20, at 8:00 pm at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 East Randolph, Chicago. In addition, Faddis and writer/broadcaster Neil Tesser will present a pre-concert conversation about the evening’s performance at 7:20 pm.
Join the Chicago Jazz Ensemble for a remarkable evening featuring the music of two of the great contributors to jazz repertory – William Russo, the late great founder of The CJE and former Stan Kenton Orchestra arranger and trombonist, and Frank Foster, the Grammy® award-winning veteran, NEA Jazz Master, and former leader of the Count Basie Orchestra who continues to create new music and entertain jazz audiences around the world.
One of America's most revered and influential composer-bandleaders, William Russo (1928-2003) created The Chicago Jazz Ensemble, was the founder of Columbia College Chicago’s Music Department and was Director of Orchestral Studies at Scuola Europea d’Orchestra Jazz in Palermo, Italy. His career spanned five decades and included performance, conducting and composition work with talents as diverse as Duke Ellington, Leonard Bernstein, Cannonball Adderley, Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzy Gillespie, Seiji Ozawa and Billie Holiday. He authored groundbreaking jazz scores, rock operas, classical works, film scores and texts on instrumental arrangement. During his career, he composed more than 200 pieces for jazz orchestra with more than 30 recordings of his work. In 1990, Russo received a Lifetime Achievement award from National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences. As a young trombonist, Russo studied with Lennie Tristano, the pianist and theorist who became a leader in the progressive jazz movement. During the late ‘40s, Russo led the revolutionary Experiment in Jazz band, and then at the age of 21 became chief composer/arranger with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. After his tenure with Kenton, Russo went on to lead his own successful bands, The Russo Orchestra in New York, and the London Jazz Orchestra, before returning to Chicago to form The Chicago Jazz Ensemble in 1965.
Best known for his work in the Count Basie Orchestra (and as the composer of the Basie hit, "Shiny Stockings"), Frank Foster began playing clarinet at age 11 before taking up the alto saxophone and eventually the tenor. By the time he was a senior in high school, he was leading and writing the arrangements for a 12-piece band. He studied at Wilberforce University in Ohio before heading to Detroit in 1949 with trumpeter Snooky Young. After completing a stint in the Army in 1953, he had the pleasure of sitting in with Charlie Parker at Birdland and he was asked to join Count Basie's band. He also was an extremely successful freelance writer, creating a large body of work for jazz, including pieces contributed to albums by singers Sarah Vaughan and Frank Sinatra, and a commissioned work for the 1980 Winter Olympics, Lake Placid Suite, written for jazz orchestra. In the 1970s, Foster played with Elvin Jones, George Coleman and Joe Farrell. He led his own band, the Loud Minority, until 1986 when he assumed leadership of the Count Basie Orchestra from Thad Jones. Foster resigned as the musical director of the orchestra in 1995 and began recording albums again. In addition to performing, Foster has also served as a musical consultant in the New York City public schools and taught at Queens College and the State University of New York at Buffalo.
The CJE’s 10th American Heritage Jazz Series continues June 5, 2009, at 8 pm, when The CJE, with MacArthur-Award winner Regina Carter as special guest on violin, takes the stage at Symphony Center for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Echoes of Nations: Dvořák Festival in a performance of Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington: “Black, Brown and Beige” and “The New Orleans Suite.”
