SAN MIGUEL SCHOOLS HOST THE THIRD ANNUAL “SCHOOL OF ROCK,”
Popular Band Styx and DJ Biz Markie to star at the Benefit Concert

WHAT: San Miguel Schools Chicago will host its 3rd Annual Signature Event on Thursday, October 22, 2009 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the House of Blues. San Miguel’s “SCHOOL OF ROCK” event will raise crucial support for their Scholarship Program with an exciting evening of a live auction, raffle, dinner, cocktails and performances from four-time multi-platinum rock band Styx and 15-year hip-hop veteran DJ Biz Markie. Honorary Chairs for the event are Larry Wert, President of NBC’s Central & Western Region and Marv Nyren, Regional Vice President of Emmis Chicago. Additionally, Mike and Pat Koldyke will be presented with San Miguel’s “Leadership in Education Award” for their support and commitment to San Miguel and their continuing efforts to improve education in Chicago’s underserved communities.

San Miguel Schools Chicago (www.sanmiguelchicago.org ) - has two campuses located in the Back of the Yards and Austin neighborhoods, and provides an innovative and accessible education for inner-city children. This unique model takes an innovative approach to education by offering an extended school day, year-round academic calendar, low student to teacher ratio and family and graduate support services. San Miguel alumni defy the odds of their neighborhoods by graduating from college at higher rates than those of their peers and earning Bachelor’s Degrees at a rate six times higher than the Chicago average for Latino students.

Larry Wert
- joined NBC5 Chicago 1998 and is currently President, Central & Western Region NBC Local Media. A native Chicagoan, Larry has been in broadcasting over 30 years. Wert is a member of several charities and organizations. In 2005, he received the Leonardo Da Vinci Award of Excellence from the Order Sons of Italy and was awarded the "Visionary Leadership Award" by the Chicago Chapter of the Anti-Defamation League. He was also inducted into the Fenwick High School Hall of Fame in 2005.

Marv Nyren - joined Emmis in 2000. Nyren was promoted to Regional Vice President for Emmis Radio in 2002 and was named Market Manager in Chicago for the newly formed cluster, WLUP-FM/WKQX-FM in 2004. Nyren’s philanthropic efforts include serving on the Board of Directors for a number of charities including the Fiesta Bowl’s charities; he was and as the co-chair for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s 2005 main fundraising event. From 2000-2005, he served on the Board of Directors of Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, where he also often volunteers as a guest lecturer.

Styx - started with humble roots in a suburban Chicago basement, Styx eventually became the first band to release four consecutive Triple-Platinum albums, with hits such as "Come Sail Away," "Lady," "Renegade," "Blue Collar Man" and "The Best of Times."
